Consequences of bulimia

In bulimia, eating disorders, frequent vomiting, laxatives and diuretics can cause a range of health problems².

Diseases of the oral cavity:
enamel erosion due to the high acidity of the vomit;
bad breath;
ulcers on the palate, tongue, inner surface of the cheeks;
enlargement of the salivary glands.
Inflammation can begin in the oral cavity due to constant trauma and bacteria introduced when vomiting is caused. Also, due to constant vomiting, the salivary glands can become inflamed. With their severe inflammation, pain, fever, they swell, suppuration is possible.

Diseases of the ENT organs:
perspiration, sore throat;
ulceration of mucous membranes;
infection, inflammation.
Causing vomiting, the patient can regularly injure the mucous membrane. If the hands are dirty at the same time, it can bring an infection.

Decreased immunity:
frequent infections;
local inflammation (throat, oral mucosa);
hypovitaminosis.
Due to malnutrition, there is a lack of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals. Food is not digested, and this affects the overall health, as well as the functioning of the immune system.

Diseases of the digestive system:
gastritis;
esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus);
peptic ulcer (develops as a complication of gastritis);
flatulence;
bloating;
constipation;

with frequent use of laxatives – a violation of intestinal motility.
Due to the constant injuries of the mucous membranes with bulimia, the risk of oncological diseases of the digestive system increases.

Endocrine disorders:
hypothyroidism;
disorders of the adrenal glands and ovaries;
disorders of the parathyroid gland.
Violations occur due to insufficient intake of nutrients and metabolic failure. Anemia and diabetes can also develop against the background of bulimia.

Cardiovascular diseases:
arrhythmia;
hypotension;
bradycardia;
ischemic disease.
These conditions develop against the background of dehydration associated with frequent vomiting and due to hypokalemia.

Kidney diseases https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidney_disease:
the formation of kidney stones;
rarely – renal failure.
The risk of kidney complications arises if the patient regularly takes diuretics or vomits so often that dehydration occurs.

In women, bulimia can cause infertility and menstrual irregularities. It also affects the condition of the skin, hair, nails. The state of health gradually worsens, there is weakness, general malaise. The longer a person suffers from bulimia, the more serious the consequences for his health will be.
